Admiral Gene and Mrs. Lucille Markey’s striking chestnut colt, Alydar, won the Blue Grass Stakes for the Calumet Farm owners in 1978. The Markeys, in poor health, had not seen their homebred star race until the Blue Grass. During the post parade, jockey Jorge Velasquez maneuvered Alydar to the Clubhouse lawn and presented him to the Markeys. Alydar bowed his head and Mrs. Markey responded with a spirited wave.
